What to Wear to a Color Run (And How to Wash the Powder Out)

Wear a white shirt you do not mind staining, bottoms you would normally run in, and older shoes. White makes the colors pop, and the powder mostly washes out.

A color run is not a race to time or a place to wear your favorite kit. Dress for mess, protect your eyes and lungs, and the rest of the day takes care of itself.

Most color runs follow the same format: an untimed 5K where color powder is thrown at you at stations along the course. What you wear decides how much of that day ends up as a stain, so it is worth five minutes of planning before race day.

In a hurry? Three things cover the whole day:

Details on each, plus how to get the powder out afterward, below.

ItemWhy you want it
White teeThe color shows up best on white. Event shirt or the cheapest plain one.
Shorts or leggingsWhatever you would normally exercise in. Comfort over looks.
Older shoes and socksPowder gets into mesh and laces and never fully leaves.
Sunglasses or gogglesKeep powder out of your eyes at the stations.
Bandana or maskWorth it for asthma or sensitive lungs. Keep the inhaler along.
Zip-lock bagPhone and keys go in before the first station, not after.

The outfit that works

Most color runs hand you a shirt in your registration packet, and that shirt is the easy choice. If yours does not include one, plain white running shirts are cheap and do the job just as well.

  • A white tee, event shirt or plain, so the color shows up clearly against the fabric.
  • Running shorts or leggings, whatever you would normally train in. Comfort matters more than looks here.
  • Older running shoes. Powder gets into the laces and mesh and does not fully come out, even after a wash.
  • Socks you can sacrifice, since they take as much color as your shoes.

Costumes and tutus are normal at these events. Dressing up is part of the fun, so do not feel like you need to look like a serious runner.

Organizers say a lot of participants are running their first 5K ever, and the crowd dresses accordingly.

Just remember that powder can leave a faint tint on white fabric, so save anything you love for another day. Treat the outfit as disposable and you will enjoy the color a lot more.

Protect your eyes, lungs and phone

Powder in the eyes is the one real nuisance of the day, so cover the basics before the start.

Sunglasses or even goggles keep powder out of your eyes at close range, and a cheap pair of running sunglasses does the job fine.

The powder is cornstarch with FDA and FD&C approved dyes and it is non-toxic, but you still do not want a lungful at close range. Put your phone and keys in a zip-lock bag before the first color station, not after.

There is no good way to clean powder out of a charging port.

If you are running with kids, keep them close at each color station. The crowds bunch up right where the powder is thrown.

It is easy to get separated for a minute in the noise and the color cloud.

Race day tips

Show up early. Registration lines move slowly, and you do not want to miss the start while you are still signing in.

Start toward the back of the pack if you want less color on you. The crowd near the front gets hit hardest at each station.

Move up if you want the opposite, since a color run is untimed and nobody is chasing a finish time.

The real color happens at the Finish Festival, where the biggest throws are saved for the party at the end. Plan to stick around for it rather than heading straight to your car, since it is usually the best part of the day.

Most color runs happen in summer, so wear sunscreen even on a short 5K course. Powder plus sweat plus sun for a couple of hours adds up faster than you would expect.

How to get color powder out of everything

Clothes, skin, hair, and your car all need slightly different treatment. Handle them in this order.

  1. Clothes: shake or brush off as much dry powder as possible outside, before it gets wet. Water sets the color into the fibers, so brushing first makes a real difference. Wash the item separately in cold water, the same day if you can. Expect a faint tint to remain on white fabric even after washing.
  2. Skin: soap and water removes it without any special product. Do not scrub hard, since normal washing is enough.
  3. Hair: rinse first to knock out loose powder, then shampoo and condition as normal. A second shampoo the next day catches anything left behind.
  4. Car: cover the seats with big towels or trash bags before the ride home, and use baby wipes on hands before anyone climbs in. A few minutes of prep here saves an upholstery cleanup later.

Or keep the color

Plenty of runners skip the wash entirely and keep the shirt as a souvenir instead. A color-splattered shirt hung on a wall is a fine reminder of the day.

It is your call, and either way you already had the fun.

The bottom line

Wear white, bring old shoes, and protect your eyes, lungs, and phone before the first station. If you are organizing a color run at a school, the same clothing and safety advice applies to every participant.
